Release Highlights

The SnapshotCM 1.78 release adds a number of features requested by users, and fixes a number of user reported and locally discovered problems. However, the major goals of this release are to provide atomic promote and support Windows Vista.

Atomic Promote

When copying a set of changes from one snapshot to another, that set of changes will appear atomically in the target snapshot. That is, it will either all be there, or none of it will be there. Users of the target snapshot will either see all of the copied changes or none of the changes. This key ability eliminates the possibility of a workspace or snapshot update getting only part of a concurrent promote.

An added benefit is that the new functionality is both faster and more robust than the previous copy functionality. In fact, previous limitations involving circular changes are now handled automatically by the new technology.

Windows Vista Support

While previous releases could be installed on Windows Vista and worked except for a few needed work-arounds in the clients, release 1.78 fixes the compatibility problems, and is fully functional. For more details on Windows Vista compatibilty, see the current issue of Notes From the Trenches.

Other Enhancements and Fixes

  • The Workspace Browser refreshes from the server automatically whenever it gets focus, so you will always be interacting with the current snapshot state.
  • Text files will be compared as text when resolving the unknown status in the Workspace Browser. This helps when re-importing external text files which have different end-of-line characters. If the content is the same while ignoring any eol character differences, then files will be considered equivalent, allowing you to focus on integrating real changes.
  • The User Licenses tab will now show a user's SnapshotCM client revision, enabling administrators to easily tell the update status of their users.
  • Strip both leading and trailing whitespace from wmap interactive inputs to avoid writing a corrupted workspace mapping file.
  • No longer preserve the modification date of a file whose keywords are updated after a check in.

See the SnapshotCM Change List for a complete list of changes.
